In writing a short essay on appreciating flowers in Singapore, we found that our encounters were often defined by absence. Their brief moments of blooming were easy to miss, and we arrived almost always too early or too late. “The Flowers That Never Bloomed” is a series of illustrations conceived to acknowledge these missing petals – unbloomed flowers.
Aligned with our practice of using the 3D printer in unconventional ways, we developed forms that remain intentionally close to the language of 2D. The illustrations were translated into physical objects by 3D-printing them as thin surface layers, as if lifted directly from paper. Their minimal thickness allows them to slip comfortably between pages, functioning as both a marker and a material extension of the graphic itself.
These bookmarks, shaped as floral silhouettes, are intentionally larger than a typical bookmark. They are designed to extend beyond the edges of a book, allowing the book itself to act as a vessel. In doing so, they function not only as markers, but also as a small decorative floral arrangement emerging from the pages.
